Subway Gluten Free – Everything You Need To Know

Becky avatarPublished by | Last updated 17th June, 2025

Welcome to Great Without Gluten, your secret source for tasty, homemade, gluten-free recipes and lifestyle information.

I’m Becky, a Coeliac recipe maker based in the UK, and today we’re diving into the gluten-free options available at Subway in the United Kingdom.

As someone who’s been living with Coeliac disease for over three decades, I understand the importance of finding safe and delicious food options when dining out.

With that in mind, given that most sandwich shops are absolute wheat and gluten hell, is there even such a thing as a gluten free Subway sandwich, or are you better off just making a D-I-Y sub of your own?

Well, you might be surprised to learn that there are an abundance of Subway gluten free options, thanks to their huge selection of gluten-free sandwich breads, salads, sides, as well as GF toppings and proteins!

Of course, just make sure you’re super careful with cross-contamination and exposure to any gluten or wheat ingredients elsewhere, but otherwise, with an abundance of caution, you can be quite safe here.

Let’s explore what Subway has to offer for those of us following a gluten-free diet. 🥪✨

Introduction to Subway’s Gluten-Free Options

Subway has made strides in recent years to accommodate customers with gluten sensitivities and Coeliac disease.

They now offer gluten-free bread in many of their UK locations, which is a game-changer for those of us craving a sandwich on the go.

However, it’s important to note that while Subway does provide gluten-free options, cross-contamination is still a risk due to the nature of their food preparation area.

So, in short, do Subway do gluten free sandwiches and other menu choices? Yes, absolutely! However, always remember that you’re equally responsible for your own safety.

With potential cross-contamination aplenty from Subway’s massive selection of otherwise non-gluten-free breads, wraps, and other breaded items, some caution is advised.

Subway Allergen Policy (Gluten Free)

So, looking at the allergen menu it looks like Subway does provide a gluten-free bread option, which is a proper game-changer for us sandwich lovers. This 6-inch roll comes sealed to minimize cross-contamination risks.

However, it’s important to note that while they’ve made strides to accommodate us, cross-contamination is still a concern due to the nature of their food prep area.

They’re quite upfront about this, which I appreciate.

So, while we can enjoy a sub on gluten-free bread, it’s always best to have a chat with the staff about your dietary needs.

Remember, most of their salads are naturally gluten-free too, as long as you skip the croutons and watch out for certain proteins.

As always, it’s up to us to stay vigilant and make informed choices.

You can read the full Subway allergen menu here.

Subs

The heart of Subway’s menu is, of course, their subs. For Coeliacs, the key is to start with the gluten-free bread option.

Gluten-Free Bread

Subway offers a 6-inch gluten-free roll that’s manufactured in a completely gluten-free environment.

This bread comes sealed to minimize the risk of cross-contamination before it reaches the store.

It’s important to note that this bread is only available in the 6-inch size, not as a footlong option.

Wraps

It’s important to note that while Subway offers gluten-free bread for their sandwiches, their standard wraps are not gluten-free

Customers with gluten sensitivities should opt for a gluten-free bread option or a salad instead of wraps.

Rotisserie-Style Chicken Wrap: Now, this is a bit posh! Rotisserie-style chicken in a wrap, with your choice of salad and sauces. Like the others, it’s not gluten-free as is, but could be turned into a salad.

Classic B.M.T.® Wrap: Classic B.M.T.®: Bit of everything in this one! It’s got pepperoni, salami, and ham, I believe (though your message cut off). You can add your choice of salad and sauces. Not gluten-free due to the wrap, but could be made into a gluten-free salad.

Meatball Marinara Wrap: (Pork & Beef): Oh, this one’s a proper hearty choice! You get a wrap filled with meaty meatballs in a rich marinara sauce. Add your choice of salad and sauces for a real treat. Not gluten-free due to the wrap and likely the meatballs too.

Philly Steak Wrap: A bit of American flair, this one! It’s got formed steak mixed with onions and green peppers in a wrap. You can add whatever fresh bits you fancy. Not gluten-free because of the wrap, and the steak might contain gluten too.

Tuna Mayo Wrap: A classic sarnie filling, this. You get a wrap stuffed with tuna mayo, and you can add whatever salad and sauces you like. The wrap’s got gluten in it, but you could ask for a salad version if you’re avoiding gluten.

Turkey & Ham: A lovely combo, this. You’ve got turkey breast and formed ham, topped with cheese and your choice of salad and sauces. Not gluten-free as is, but could be adapted to a salad.

Spicy Italian: Ooh, this one’s got a bit of a kick! Packed with salami, pepperoni, and cheese, plus whatever salad and sauces you fancy. Again, not gluten-free because of the wrap, but could be made into a salad.

Chicken Tikka Wrap: Ooh, a bit of spice! This wrap’s got chicken with a tikka flavour, and you can add whatever fresh bits and bobs take your fancy. The wrap’s has gluten in, but it could be made into a salad for our gluten-dodging friends.

Ham Wrap: A classic choice, this. You can stuff your wrap with formed ham and all the fresh salad and sauces that tickle your fancy. Not gluten-free due to the wrap, but you could ask for a salad version if you’re avoiding gluten.

Chicken Breast Wrap: A proper healthy choice, this one. You get a wrap filled with tender roast chicken breast, and you can jazz it up with all sorts of fresh salad and sauces. Not gluten-free because of the wrap, but you could ask for it as a salad if you’re watching your gluten intake.

Turkey Breast Wrap: Turkey Breast: A lighter option, this one. Filled with formed turkey breast and whatever fresh bits and bobs you like. The wrap itself contains gluten, but you could have it as a salad instead.

Veggie Delite® Wrap: A light option for veggies. It’s essentially a salad wrap – you choose all your favourite veggies and sauces. The wrap contains gluten, but you could have it as a salad bowl instead.

Cheese & Guacamole Wrap Ooh, this sounds lovely! A wrap with cheese and creamy guacamole. You can add… (your message cut off here, love, but I imagine you can add your choice of salad and sauces). Not gluten-free due to the wrap.

Plant Patty (VE) Wrap: Perfect for our vegan pals! A plant-based patty in a wrap, with your choice of salad and sauces. The wrap’s not gluten-free, but the patty might be – worth checking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions that I found while researching the gluten-free Subway menu options:

Is Subway gluten free?

Yes, Subway does offer gluten-free options in the UK. They provide a 6-inch gluten-free bread roll that’s manufactured in a completely gluten-free environment and comes sealed to minimise cross-contamination risks.

Does Subway have gluten free bread?

Yes! Subway UK offers a dedicated gluten-free bread roll, which is made in a gluten‑free facility. However, given that other ingredients in their stores contain gluten and all the menu options are prepared on shared equipment and prep surfaces, there’s still a notable risk of cross‑contamination.

Are Subway hash browns gluten free?

By recipe, Subway’s signature hash browns contain only potato and seasonings and do not include gluten ingredients. That said, they’re cooked in the same kitchen environment and prep areas as all their other wheat‑containing items, so cross‑contact is possible, and caution is advised.

To Sum Up

As a Coeliac, dining at Subway can be a relatively safe experience if you follow these guidelines:

  1. Always request gluten-free bread for your sub.
  2. Stick to the known gluten-free proteins and toppings.
  3. Be aware of the cross-contamination risk and ask staff to change gloves and use clean utensils.
  4. Consider opting for a salad or protein bowl to minimise cross-contamination risks.
  5. Choose simple sides like plain crisps that are certified gluten-free.
  6. Stick to basic sauces and dressings that are known to be gluten-free.
  7. When in doubt, ask to see the allergen menu or speak with a manager.

Remember, while Subway does offer gluten-free options, the risk of cross-contamination is always present in a shared kitchen environment.

If you’re particularly sensitive, it might be best to prepare your meals at home using trusted gluten-free ingredients.

I hope this guide helps you navigate the Subway menu with confidence!
