The Ultimate Five Guys Gluten-Free Menu Guide For 2025
If you’re craving a celiac-friendly burger joint, our Five Guys gluten-free menu guide dives into which burgers, sides, and hot dogs you can safely order.
From my experience, not just as a celiac for nearly 30 years, but having been through countless different fast food chains before, they’re often a bit a hit and miss when it comes to gluten.
If it’s a burger, sandwich, or a hot dog, then most of them come on wheat-based bread or buns that come with gluten in abundance, with no gluten-free substitutes or alternatives. 🍔🥪🌭
On the other hand, anything that’s fried – fried chicken, nuggets, and French fries – is typically either battered with wheat flour, or they’re fried in shared, contaminated fryer oil. 🍗🍟🍤
So, with those potential hazards crossing out most fast food chains for celiacs or folks with pretty severe gluten allergies, what about Five Guys?
They’re celebrated for their hand-formed burgers, customizable toppings, and signature fresh-cut fries, all served up quickly (and expensively), but their menu can be quite daunting. ✍
Most of the ingredients at Five Guys are naturally gluten-free, though either when finalized or by nature, you may come across hidden wheat and gluten in the buns, sauces, or prep areas.
If you’re not sure which menu items are or aren’t safe to order as a celiac, or if you have severe gluten intolerance, our Five Guys gluten-free guide is here to help you decide!

Disclaimer
Now, before we go too far into our Five Guys gluten-free menu, it’s worth bearing in mind that Five Guys doesn’t operate a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, with lots of possible cross-contact.
Additionally, while some of these ingredients don’t naturally come with wheat or gluten, not a single Five Guys menu item is tested to meet the FDA’s strict <20 ppm gluten threshold. 🌾🚫
With that said, all of Five Guys’ burgers, hot dogs, and fries are prepared in the same cooking stations, and most of the toppings and sauces share utensils, equipment, and prep surfaces.
On top of that, there’s likely cross-contamination with flour, buns, or batter, and you ought to be extra cautious, as you’re never that far away from wheat, barley, and rye. 🍞🥐
So, for the purposes of our Five Guys gluten-free guide, you really should be treating even the safest things here more like gluten-friendly or gluten-sensitive, instead of 100% certified GF.👩🍳🔪🍴
Five Guys Allergen Policy (Gluten-Free)
Another neat way to prepare yourself before visiting your local Five Guys, as a celiac or anyone with gluten allergies, is to keep yourself up-to-date with their Nutrition & Allergen Guide. 📝
All you need to do is head over to the Five Guys website, go to the Menu page, scroll down, and click on the ‘Five Guys Ingredient & Allergen Guide’ link to open up a separate PDF file.
That Nutrition & Allergen Information PDF file is everything you need to know what you can or can’t safely order at Five Guys, and I’d 100% recommend that you download or bookmark it.
You could even save this on your phone, just in case you need to quickly refer to it while you’re waiting in line to order, and remember to check in for newer, updated versions of this PDF.
As Five Guys regularly make changes to their menu, suppliers, ingredients, and recipes, this PDF file will get updated to reflect new nutritional, ingredient, and allergen information, too! 🍔🍟
Anyway, here’s what you can learn from scanning and reading Five Guys’ Nutrition & Allergen Information PDF file:
- You can find a detailed nutritional breakdown for every single menu item, where you can learn and figure out how much nutrition you’re eating per meal – serving sizes, calories, carbs, sugar, fat, protein, fiber, etc., just in case you’re conscious about your diet and daily intake.
- Additionally, further below, you would also find the ingredients list, where Five Guys lists down every single ingredient used for each menu item. This is actually a great way to filter out all the stuff you can’t eat as a celiac, such as avoiding anything that contains ‘wheat flour’.
- Moreover, you can find a handy allergens breakdown, which is especially useful for celiacs and anyone here who’s allergic to wheat and gluten, with a simple ‘🔴’ symbol to mark if a specific menu item contains any one of the nine major allergens, as classified by the FDA.
- Of course, using that allergens list, you can quickly filter out what you can or can’t safely eat. If you’re a celiac or if you have gluten allergies and intolerances, simply avoid anything here that contains ‘gluten/wheat’, in addition to any other allergens that you might be allergic to.
Still, with that out of the way, and for a clearer look at their entire menu, our Five Guys gluten-free guide is here to walk you through potential landmines and what you need to look out for!
Burgers
It’s not a Five Guys experience without at least sampling their famously fresh and hand-formed meat patties, grilled to order, though sadly, they’re not in the Five Guys gluten-free menu. 🍔
While some of the ingredients that fill the void between those toasty burger buns might be free of gluten ingredients, every single Five Guys burger is served on a sesame-seed bun. 🚫🌾🍞
As such, not a single Five Guys burger here is safe for celiacs… Unless you skip that burger bun, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon, and there’s no gluten-free bun option, either!
❌ Hamburger
❌ Cheeseburger
❌ Bacon Burger
❌ Bacon Cheeseburger
❌ Little Hamburger
❌ Little Cheeseburger
❌ Little Bacon Burger
❌ Little Bacon Cheeseburger
So, let’s break apart each of these burgers to figure out why they didn’t make it into our Five Guys gluten-free menu:
Hamburger: Single hand-formed beef patty seasoned and grilled, then placed on a sesame-seed bun. The patty itself contains no gluten, but the burger bun is made with wheat.
Cheeseburger: Same as the hamburger, plus a slice of American-style cheese melted atop the beef. The cheese is gluten-free, but the bun is not, thus making it unsafe for celiacs.
Bacon Burger: Beef patty topped with apple-wood smoked bacon strips on a sesame bun. The bacon and patty are gluten-free, but the bun contains wheat, so skip this if you’re allergic!
Bacon Cheeseburger: Beef patty, melted American cheese, and bacon, and all of them are deliciously gluten-free by ingredient, but they’re then served on a wheat bun.
Little Hamburger: A smaller hand-formed beef patty on a sesame bun. The mini patty is free of gluten, but the burger bun is not, so do avoid this if you have severe gluten allergies.
Little Cheeseburger: One mini patty with American cheese on a wheat bun. The cheese and meat are safe, but the burger bun isn’t, making this extremely hazardous to celiacs.
Little Bacon Burger: Mini patty topped with bacon on a sesame bun. The meat and bacon are gluten-free, though once again, the burger bun is not, given that it’s made entirely of wheat.
Little Bacon Cheeseburger: Mini patty with cheese and bacon on a wheat bun. All the toppings are naturally gluten-free, but that signature Five Guys burger bun contains wheat and gluten.
All in all, every single Five Guys burger isn’t celiac-safe, nor is it safe for anyone with any severe gluten allergies, and sadly, they don’t currently offer gluten-free bun substitutes. 🍔👉🚫🌾
Dogs
Unfortunately, the same story goes with the hot dogs part of our Five Guys gluten-free guide, as these iconic, all-beef hot dogs are split, grilled, and then served on classic buns. 🌾🚫🌭
Just like those Five Guys burgers from earlier, every standard hot dog comes on a wheat-based bread, and currently, there’s not a single gluten-free bread substitute or alternative. 🙁💔
❌ Hot Dog
❌ Cheese Dog
❌ Bacon Dog
❌ Bacon Cheese Dog
For context, let’s take a closer look at all these hot dogs to see why they didn’t make it into my personal Five Guys gluten-free shortlist:
Hot Dog: 100% all-beef frank split and caramelized on the griddle. The hot dog itself contains no gluten, but the wheat bun does, making it completely hazardous for any celiac.
Cheese Dog: All-beef hot dog topped with melted American-style cheese. Cheese is naturally gluten-free, yet it’s served on a wheat bun, so avoid this if you’re allergic to gluten.
Bacon Dog: Grilled beef hot dog wrapped or topped with apple-wood smoked bacon. Both the bacon and the hot dog are gluten-free, but the standard hot dog bun contains wheat.
Bacon Cheese Dog: A Beef hot dog with melted cheese and bacon strips. All the toppings are free of gluten, but once again, just like the other hot dogs here, that bun is made of wheat.
While some other fast food chains might offer you ‘bun-less’ hot dogs, where the wheat bun is swapped out with either a lettuce wrap or served in a bowl, Five Guys doesn’t have this option.
Fries
Alas, if you’re a celiac or if you have extreme gluten allergies, you may have a chance with this next bit of our Five Guys gluten-free guide – their legendary, delicious hand-cut fries! 🍠🥔🍟
Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and cooked twice in 100% peanut oil, these fries are technically gluten-free, but double-check first that the fryer oil isn’t shared with gluten items!
✅ Five Guys Style
✅ Cajun Style
So, let’s compare these fries against those burgers and hot dogs, and see why these are a solid choice for our Five Guys gluten-free guide:
Five Guys Style: Boardwalk-style potatoes are cut fresh in-house daily, then fried twice in pure peanut oil – first to cook through, then to crisp up. There are no wheat or gluten ingredients in here, and since fries are the only item cooked in peanut oil, cross-contact can be quite limited.
Cajun Style: Identical double-fried potatoes tossed in a robust blend of paprika, garlic, onion, and pepper spices. The seasoning mix contains no wheat or gluten, and because those same dedicated fryers are used, there’s somewhat minimal risk of cross-contamination, as well.
Again, while these fries don’t contain wheat or gluten by recipe or ingredients, there’s a slight risk that they’re fried in shared fryers and fryer oil, where they might have fried something else. 🥜
If that fryer was used to fry other menu items that contain wheat and gluten, the cross-contact alone could be quite risky for celiacs, or folks with fairly severe gluten allergies, so be warned. Make sure you check.
Sandwiches
If neither burger nor hot dog suits your taste buds, the Five Guys gluten-free menu has a great selection of sandwiches too, but sadly, there’s not a single one that’s celiac-safe. 🥓🥬🍅
Even the non-burger sandwiches at Five Guys rely on soft, toasted sesame seed buns, which are filled with wheat and gluten aplenty, thus making it downright dangerous for celiacs! 🥪
❌ Veggie Sandwich
❌ Cheese Veggie Sandwich
❌ Grilled Cheese
❌ BLT
Besides the wheat bread, let’s take a closer peek at each sandwich to see why they didn’t make it into the Five Guys gluten-free menu:
Veggie Sandwich: Grilled onions, mushrooms, and green peppers layered with lettuce and a bit of tomato on a sesame seed bun. The vegetables themselves are gluten-free, but the bun itself contains wheat flour, with no gluten-free substitute.
Cheese Veggie Sandwich: All of the above plus American-style cheese on the same sesame seed bun. Again, the only gluten comes from the bun, thus making this entire sandwich unsafe for a celiac like me, or anyone here with severe gluten allergies.
Grilled Cheese: American-style cheese melted on an inside-out sesame seed bun. Though the cheese and other ingredients are safe, the bun makes it unsafe for celiacs, owing to just how much wheat and gluten there is on that bread.
BLT: Crispy apple-wood smoked bacon, fresh tomato, mayo, and hand-shredded lettuce on a sesame seed bun. All the fillings are naturally gluten-free, but once again, that sandwich bun contains wheat and gluten in abundance.
Unfortunately, unlike some of the places that I’ve covered in the past, which offer the choice to swap out the wheat bread with a gluten-free lettuce wrap, Five Guys doesn’t have this. 🚫🌾
Toppings
Alternatively, if you’re not content with pre-set burgers and sandwiches, you can use the build-your-own approach by picking and piling on a bunch of toppings on top of each other! 🍔🥪
Best of all, given your lack of choices earlier, all these standard toppings and fillings in the Five Guys gluten-free menu are naturally celiac-safe and gluten-free by recipe. 🥬🌶️🍅🧅🍄
✅ Mayo
✅ Lettuce
✅ Pickles
✅ Tomatoes
✅ Grilled Onions
✅ Grilled Mushrooms
✅ Ketchup
✅ Mustard
✅ Relish
✅ Onions
✅ Jalapeño Peppers
✅ Green Peppers
✅ Bar-B-Que Sauce
✅ Hot Sauce
✅ A1 Sauce
Let’s check out what these toppings, sauces, and fillings are made of, and why they’re a great choice for our Five Guys gluten-free menu:
Mayo: Five Guys uses a standard egg-and-oil mayonnaise that contains no wheat and gluten ingredients. It’s dispensed from a sealed container, but if you’re highly sensitive, you can ask for it on the side to avoid any shared pump residue and prevent any cross-contamination.
Lettuce: Hand-torn iceberg lettuce comes fresh to order. Since it’s never on the grill or near any wheat products, it’s about as low-risk as a topping gets, as far as cross-contact goes.
Pickles: Five crisp Mount Olive dill pickle slices are naturally gluten-free. They’re scooped from dedicated bins, so cross-contact is fairly minimal but just watch for any stray sesame seeds.
Tomatoes: Two fresh slices of Roma tomato, hand-cut, with zero gluten concerns. They’re also handled on the same prep table as other veggies, but never near the grill, so it’s also relatively safe cross-contamination-wise.
Grilled Onions: Hand-chopped yellow onions sear on the flat-top grill. Those onions themselves contain no gluten, but the grill also handles buns and patties, so if you’re sensitive to wheat or gluten, make sure you request fresh gloves and a clean spatula when prepping the onion.
Grilled Mushrooms: Baby Portabellas are grilled exactly like the onions, which means that they are gluten-free by ingredients, but subject to the same cross-contact risk on the shared flat top, so double-check this if you’re a celiac or if you’re highly allergic or intolerant to gluten.
Ketchup: Heinz ketchup has gluten-free ingredients. However, the pump sits near other sauce pumps, so if you’d like, ask the staff to wipe it down before use, ensuring minimal contact with any wheat or gluten-containing menu items.
Mustard: Yellow mustard that contains no gluten. As with the ketchup, all those shared pump handles can be wiped or swapped on request, should you be concerned with cross-contact.
Relish: A classic sweet & sour pickle relish with no wheat ingredients. It’s scooped from its own jar, with comparatively minimal risk of cross-contamination, but be cautious nevertheless.
Onions: Fresh, raw diced onions are gluten-free and never touch the grill, just the prep table, and it’s fairly safe cross-contamination-wise.
Jalapeño Peppers: Hand-chopped fresh jalapeños add heat with zero gluten. They share the same prep area as other veggies, so once again, somewhat minimal contact risks.
Green Peppers: Thinly sliced bell peppers are gluten-free by nature and handled identically to the other fresh vegetables, so they ought to be safe for celiacs.
Bar-B-Que Sauce: Cattlemen’s Brand BBQ sauce is made without wheat flour. It’s gluten-free by ingredients, though it’s dispensed from a communal pump, but request a clean nozzle if you are concerned about cross-contamination.
Hot Sauce: The hot sauce contains no gluten ingredients. The pump sits near other sauces, so a quick wipe can give you extra peace of mind, particularly if you’re a celiac or if you have a bad gluten allergy.
A1 Sauce: A1 Original Steak Sauce is gluten-free by formula. It, too, comes from all those same shared dispensers, so you can ask for it on the side if needed, and if you’re worried about cross-contact risks.
Now, do remember that even though all of these toppings are gluten-free and wheat-free, it’s not a guarantee that they’ll remain gluten-free when they’re being served to you! 🍴🚫🌾
Milkshake Mix-Ins
One pretty unique menu item that’s distinct to the Five Guys gluten-free menu is their milkshake mix-ins, where you can enjoy hand-spun milkshakes with any of their delectable mix-ins! 🥤🥛
More than that, most of them – except for a couple of mix-ins – are actually gluten-free as well, but shared blenders and utensils mean there’s a small cross-contamination risk. 🥓🍌🍓🍫
✅ Bacon
✅ Candy Cane Crunch
✅ Bananas
❌ REESE’S Cups
✅ Strawberries
✅ Chocolate
❌ Oreo Cookies
✅ Oreo Crème
✅ Peanut Butter
✅ Salted Caramel
✅ Vanilla
Now, to analyze why a couple of these milkshake mix-ins didn’t make it into our personal Five Guys gluten-free shortlist, let’s take a closer look at them:
Bacon: Crispy, sweet applewood-smoked bacon chopped right into your milkshake for a salty crunch. It’s naturally gluten-free, and the only big asterisk to be cautious of here is the shared blender usage, with some cross-contamination.
Candy Cane Crunch: Vanilla shake blended with peppermint candy cane pieces, topped with whipped cream and extra candy cane. All these ingredients are gluten-free, and it’s a festive twist on the classic, with minor cross-contact to be wary of.
Bananas: Real banana slices mixed into your shake. There are no wheat or gluten ingredients, just fresh fruit and the shared blender, so celiacs ought to be a bit cautious, regardless.
REESE’S Cups: Chunks of peanut butter cups folded into your milkshake. Most Reese’s Cups are gluten-free by recipe, offering a nice peanut-chocolate combo, but according to Five Guys’ own allergen guide, these ones contain traces of wheat or gluten, so avoid them if you’re a celiac.
Strawberries: Fresh strawberries suspended in homemade simple syrup swirl through your milkshake, and it’s also totally gluten-free and fruity, awesomely safe for celiacs!
Chocolate: A double dose of chocolate and fudge blended in for extra decadence, with no gluten in the syrup or fudge, making this safe for celiacs, so long as you’re aware of all the potential cross-contamination in the blender.
Oreo Cookies: Crushed Oreo cookie pieces that contain wheat flour, making this unsafe for celiacs and anyone with any severe gluten allergies.
Oreo Crème: The sweet ‘cream’ filling from the Oreo cookies technically should contain wheat traces, but according to the Five Guys official allergen guide, these are actually free of gluten and wheat, so unlike the cookie pieces, this one’s safe for celiacs.
Peanut Butter: Creamy, natural peanut butter sweetened with a touch of honey. It’s also gluten-free by ingredient and recipe, too.
Salted Caramel: Silky caramel with a savory salt kick, thickened without wheat flour, and it’s perfect for a sweet-and-savory mash-up, without the threat of gluten or wheat.
Vanilla: Rich vanilla syrup blended into your shake for classic flavor. Equally, there are no wheat or gluten ingredients here.
Again, remember that if you’re highly sensitive or are allergic to gluten and wheat, you should ask for a clean blender or a quick wipe-down between orders to minimize cross-contact. 🍪🍦
Bear in mind that the same blenders and all equipment would be used between the wheat-free and wheat-based mix-ins, so the contamination is quite serious, especially for a celiac. 🍧🍨
Drinks
When it comes to beverages, the Five Guys gluten-free menu keeps it refreshingly simple, with no gluten in any of their bottled or fountain drinks, so it’s easy for celiacs to stay refreshed! 🥤
✅ Fountain Drink (Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite, Dr Pepper, etc.)
✅ Dasani Water Bottle
✅ Coca-Cola Bottle
✅ Diet Coke Bottle
✅ Coke Zero Sugar Bottle
✅ Sprite Bottle
✅ Dr Pepper Bottle
✅ Lemonade
For the sake of completeness, let’s take apart each beverage to see how they compare in our Five Guys gluten-free guide:
Fountain Drink (Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite, Dr Pepper, etc.): Classic fountain sodas contain no gluten in the ingredients. However, they share soda nozzles, so ask for the spout to be wiped clean before pouring if you’re highly sensitive to gluten.
Dasani Water Bottle: Pure bottled water, and it’s factory-sealed, with no gluten ingredients, and there’s likely to be zero cross-contact once opened, too.
Coca-Cola Bottle: The iconic cola in a sealed bottle, and it’s naturally gluten-free and safe for celiacs, and for folks with severe gluten allergies.
Diet Coke Bottle: Zero-calorie cola with no gluten ingredients, then served in a tamper-evident bottle, which also has a fairly minimal risk of cross-contact.
Coke Zero Sugar Bottle: Sugar-free cola, gluten-free by recipe, and factory-sealed for safety, which also helps with curbing any cross-contamination during the prep.
Sprite Bottle: Lemon-lime soda with no gluten, and it’s factory-sealed to eliminate any cross-contact risk and picking up trace gluten, as well.
Dr Pepper Bottle: Blend of 23 flavors in a sealed bottle, which contains no gluten ingredients, and with fairly minimal cross-contact.
Lemonade: Fresh-made lemonade from lemons, water, and sugar—gluten-free by recipe. Dispensed from a fountain; request a clean nozzle if you need extra assurance.
As always, while these Five Guys gluten-free drinks are free of wheat ingredients, always double-check to make sure that there’s no cross-contact during the prep at the drinks station. 🍋🥤🧊
To Sum Up
To wrap things up, the Five Guys gluten-free menu is quite restrictive, with most of their iconic menu items – burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches – being a hazard for celiacs. 🍔🌭🥪
Unlike some of its rivals, which have started to either offer gluten-free bread options or even a bun-less lettuce wrap option, Five Guys still use wheat-based bread and buns for their menu.
On the other hand, if these burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches are hazardous if you have a bad gluten allergy or want to maintain a strict gluten-free diet, you don’t have many choices. 🍟
The delicious Five Guys fries are usually fried separately, and while there’s a slight risk of cross-contamination, these are comparatively quite safe for folks with gluten allergies.
Meanwhile, the individual toppings here are gluten-free and celiac-safe, but I really can’t think of many ways you could enjoy these without an accompanying burger, hot dog, or sandwich.
Still, at least Five Guys’ other speciality, their milkshake mix-ins, are mostly gluten-free too, so at least celiacs like me could still enjoy a trip down to Five Guys, but that’s pretty much it. 👎

Frequently Asked Questions
As I was doing some research for this Five Guys gluten-free guide, I found some very interesting questions across a few community forums, so I thought I’d try to answer these here:
Does Five Guys offer any gluten-free menu items?
Five Guys doesn’t operate a certified gluten-free kitchen, and most of their core menu items do use wheat-based buns or batter. However, their fries are gluten-free and fried separately, with only slight cross-contamination risks, and most of their milkshake mix-ins are safe, too.
Are Five Guys’ fries safe for celiacs?
Yes! Both Five Guys Style and Cajun Style fries are made from potatoes, and they’re then cooked in 100% peanut oil with no gluten ingredients. They also share the oil with no wheat-containing items, so cross-contact risks are minimal, but you might want to double-check, just in case.
Can I get a gluten-free burger at Five Guys?
Some Five Guys locations might offer gluten-specific modifications, such as swapping out that wheat-based burger bun with a lettuce wrap, but it’s not standard practice. As such, since the entire Five Guys burger menu is built on wheat buns, it’s hard to find gluten-free burgers here.
Which toppings and sauces are gluten-free?
All of the Five Guys standard toppings – mayo, mustard, ketchup, A1 Sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, jalapeños, as well as green peppers – and most of the milkshake mix-ins are also gluten-free by recipe, so there’s plenty of options for folks who are allergic to gluten and wheat, or if you have celiac disease.
How can I minimize gluten cross-contact at Five Guys?
Make sure you let the staff know that you have celiac disease, and confirm that they’re using fresh gloves for the prep and have clean prep surfaces, too! I’d also consider verifying that the fries are cooked in clean, uncontaminated peanut oil and that the milkshake blenders are wiped clean for any cross-contact with the wheat-based mix-ins, as well.
