- Packed with cheesy flavour and a hint of onion
- Light and flaky texture
- Quick and easy to make
- Versatile – great for breakfast, lunch, or as a snack
- Freezer-friendly for future enjoyment

- Perfect for sharing at gatherings or potlucks
Ingredients
- 250g gluten-free self-raising flour
- 1 tsp gluten-free baking powder
- 50g butter (cold and cubed)
- 100g mature cheddar cheese (grated)
- 3 large spring onions (finely chopped)
- 1 large egg
- 80ml milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 220°C (200°C fan) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the gluten-free self-raising flour and baking powder. This ensures a light, airy texture in your scones.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. This process is crucial for achieving that coveted flaky texture.
- Stir in the grated cheddar cheese and finely chopped onion. Make sure the onion is chopped very finely to distribute the flavour evenly throughout the scones.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring gently with a fork until a soft dough forms. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough scones.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface (use gluten-free flour) and gently knead a couple of times to bring it together.
- Pat the dough into a circle about 2cm thick. Using a 5cm round cutter, cut out the scones and place them on the prepared baking tray. Gently re-roll any scraps to cut out more scones.
- Brush the tops of the scones with a little extra milk and sprinkle with some additional grated cheese if desired.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and well-risen. The kitchen will be filled with an irresistible cheesy aroma!
- Allow the scones to cool on the tray for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Serve warm for the best experience.

Frequently asked questions
Can I freeze these gluten-free cheese and onion scones?
Yes, you can freeze these scones for up to 3 months. Allow them to cool completely, then wrap individually in cling film and place in a freezer bag. Thaw at room temperature and reheat in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
Can I use a different type of cheese?
Absolutely! While mature cheddar provides a strong flavour, you can experiment with other hard cheeses like Red Leicester, Gruyère, or even a mix of your favourites.
How long do these scones stay fresh?
These scones are best enjoyed on the day they’re baked, but they can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Refresh them in a warm oven for a few minutes before serving.
Can I make these scones dairy-free?
Yes, you can use dairy-free butter and cheese alternatives, along with plant-based milk, to make these scones dairy-free as well as gluten-free.
Why didn’t my scones rise as much as expected?
Ensure your baking powder is fresh and active. Also, avoid overworking the dough, as this can lead to tough, flat scones. Handle the dough gently for the best rise.
Can I add other herbs or spices to the scones?
Certainly! Try adding some chopped chives, thyme, or a pinch of cayenne pepper for extra flavour. Just be careful not to add too much, as it might overpower the cheese and onion.
