It’s almost like hunting around for landmines, but can the same be said about one of the most iconic delis and fast-casual sandwich shops around, Jersey Mike’s? Are they celiac-safe? 🚫🌾
Famous for their fresh-sliced meats and griddled toppings, every Jersey Mike’s sub is typically nestled in wheat-based breads and rolls, but in recent years, they’ve added GF buns, too! 🍞
So, whether you’re ordering a hot or cold sub, among all their different, highly customizable bread options, toppings, sizes, and add-ons, you can custom-order a gluten-free sandwich.
Free of wheat, barley, rye, and all the other nasty things that we celiacs can’t eat, a trip down to Jersey Mike’s can be quite safe… If you’re also careful about all the cross-contamination.
So, without further ado, if you are still not sure about what is or isn’t safe to order, join along, as our Jersey Mikes gluten-free menu guide will walk you through each step of the way. 🧀🥓

Disclaimer
Now, it’s worth bearing in mind that despite Jersey Mike’s offering gluten-free bread options, they still don’t operate a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, so it’s not completely 100% safe. 😷
Naturally, this depends on how sensitive your gluten allergies are, but if you’re a celiac and if you’re highly allergic to gluten, it’s worth being extra cautious when visiting Jersey Mike’s. ❗
Moreover, Jersey Mike’s doesn’t test their menu items to meet the FDA’s super strict <20 ppm ‘certified gluten-free‘ standard, so even the safest options here aren’t totally gluten-free, either.
Instead, you should treat our Jersey Mikes gluten-free menu here more like “gluten-friendly”, so you should be very careful, even if what you’re ordering doesn’t contain wheat in the recipe.
All their breads, wraps, and many toppings are handled on shared slicers, prep tables, as well as ovens, which would introduce quite a lot of cross-contamination across their entire menu.
As such, for celiacs, I’d suggest letting your server know, in addition to making sure that they use clean gloves, separate prep surfaces, and take extra caution when handling your order.
Jersey Mike’s Allergen Policy (Gluten-Free)
On the bright side, at least Jersey Mike’s does make it easier for you to check beforehand and see if what you’re ordering is or isn’t gluten-free or celiac-safe by heading to their website. 🌐
Once you’re on there, click and open up the Menu page, and scroll all the way down until you find the ‘Nutrition + Allergen Info’ tab. Click this, and it’ll lead you to a neat interactive menu.
On the one hand, you can’t so easily view their entire menu using this interactive tool, but it’ll at least let you input and customize your order before spitting out all the info you need. 📝✍
Here’s a quick little step-by-step guide on how to use this tool, which we’ll be referencing a lot here in our handy Jersey Mikes gluten-free menu guide:
- Pick which menu category you’d like to check out first, such as ‘Cold Subs’.
- Then, pick the product itself from that menu category, like ‘#2 Jersey Shore’s Favorite’.
- Finally, select the size or portion of the product, and in this case, a ‘Regular’ sub.
- From here, you can then customize your sub, such as picking between different bread options (including Jersey Mike’s ‘Gluten-Free Bread’ option), toppings, cheeses, and add-ons.
- Doing this would accurately fill in the Nutrition table below, where you can better preview all the fat, calories, carbs, fiber, cholesterol, sugar, and so on that’s included in each product.
- Next up, there’s the Allergen table, listing all the key allergens that you need to watch out for, including ‘Wheat’, which is what you’d want to avoid as a celiac, or if you’re allergic to gluten.
- Way below that is a pretty detailed Ingredients list too, and this is another great way to filter out allergens, and as a celiac, see if the ingredients contain any wheat flour, gluten, etc.
Anyway, rinse and repeat with that interactive tool with everything you’d want to order, and you’ll soon get a good idea of what you should filter out as items that are hazardous for you.
Cold Subs
There’s no better place to start off our Jersey Mikes gluten-free menu guide than the massive selection of cold subs to tickle your taste buds, and best of all, they’re gluten-free, too! 🍔🥪
Specifically, you could make your Jersey Mike’s classic cold subs celiac-friendly when you pick the Udi’s gluten-free roll, versus the various other default wheat-based bread options. 🚫🌾

✅ Salami & Cheese
Let’s check out what these classic cold subs are made of to see how they stack up in our Jersey Mikes gluten-free menu guide:
#2 Jersey Shore’s Favorite: Ham, provolone, and capicola topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, red wine vinegar & olive oil. Remember to make sure that you swap out the regular wheat-based breads for the Udi’s gluten-free rolls to keep it celiac-safe.
#3 Ham & Provolone / #6 Roast Beef & Provolone / #7 Turkey & Provolone: Single-protein subs with provolone. All the protein and cheese components are naturally wheat-free and gluten-free, but be mindful of cross-contamination at the slicer.
#5 The Super Sub: A triple-meat classic (ham, provolone & roast beef). Equally straightforward on a gluten-free roll, but remember to avoid any extra crispy onions or croutons, and I’d advise double-checking all the add-ons and toppings, too.
#10 Tuna Fish: Tuna mixed with mayo, then topped with lettuce and tomato. Perfectly gluten-free once you swap the hoagie for the Udi’s gluten-free roll, but once again, make sure you are extra careful with any add-ons and toppings that might introduce gluten.
#13 The Original Italian / #8 Club Sub / #9 Club Supreme / #11 Stickball Special / #12 Cancro Special: Layered Italian meats and cheeses with crisp veggies and signature dressings, and they are all gluten-free fillings, but remember to call out your allergy for extra care during assembly, and watch the add-ons and toppings for any unwanted gluten.
#14 The Veggie: A cold-pressed sub of Swiss & provolone with green peppers, onions, lettuce & tomato. Naturally gluten-free when ordered on the Udi’s roll, making it one of the safest veggie options here, especially if you’re a celiac or if you’re highly allergic to gluten.
Chicken Salad & Chipotle Turkey Subs: Pre-made salad and chipotle-turkey mixes that are all technically gluten-free, but they’re then scooped into the roll at the same station as wheat items, so make sure you try asking for a fresh scoop and clean surface.
California Club & Turkey Club Subs: Turkey, bacon, Swiss, lettuce, tomato & mayo. All of the components are gluten-free, but bacon and turkey share slicers with other meats, so it might help to request a dedicated blade change if you’re concerned about cross-contamination.
Pepperoni & Cheese / Salami & Cheese: Simple two-ingredient subs that are gluten-free by recipe, but remember to swap out the default wheat-based white bread for the Udi’s gluten-free roll. They’re great for fast ordering, but are still assembled on shared equipment.
Again, a reminder that any of Jersey Mike’s cold subs can be built on a Udi’s gluten-free roll in place of the standard, wheat-based bread options (there are 4 other options, specifically). 🍞
Plus, all of the default toppings – including meats, cheese, veggies, and dressings – are gluten-free by recipe, too. However, remember to double-check any of the extra add-ons for gluten.
These add-ons might introduce unwanted gluten into your order, and it’s not a bad idea to let the server know of any allergies you might have, and ask them to minimize cross-contact. 🥗
Since these subs are prepped and assembled on shared equipment, if you’re super sensitive to gluten, request fresh gloves and maybe ask them to change the slicer blades first, just in case.
Hot Subs
Or, if you want something nice and warm to fill you up on that cold morning, you could find a pretty nice selection of hot subs here in our Jersey Mikes gluten-free menu guide, too. 🔥🥪
Best of all, just like the cold subs, all of Jersey Mike’s hot subs could be made celiac-friendly by swapping out the regular wheat-based bread options for the Udi’s gluten-free roll. 🍞🌾

For context, let’s break down each of these hot subs in our Jersey Mikes gluten-free guide and figure out what makes them a pretty safe choice for celiacs:
Mike’s Hot Honey Chicken Cheese Steak: Crispy chicken, melted cheese, and a sweet-spicy honey sauce served on your choice of bread, and simply swap to the Udi’s gluten-free roll to make this hot sub properly gluten-friendly.
#16 Mike’s Chicken Philly: Grilled chicken, onions, peppers, and provolone cheese piled on a roll, but remember to order it on that gluten-free roll to keep it celiac-safe; otherwise, all of the default toppings are also gluten-free, too.
#42 Chipotle Chicken Cheese Steak: Tender chicken, melted cheese, and chipotle mayo blend topped with a perfectly gluten-free roll when requested, so make sure you remember to tick that option instead of the default wheat breads.
#55 Big Kahuna Chicken Cheese Steak: Sautéed onions, peppers, jalapeños, and chicken mixed with cheese on a gluten-free roll for a safe, flavor-packed option.
#26 Bacon Ranch Chicken Cheese Steak: Crispy bacon, ranch dressing, and chicken make for a creamy, gluten-friendly hot sub when built on the Udi’s gluten-free roll.
#31 California Chicken Cheese Steak: Slices of avocado, bacon, tomato, and chicken all come together on the optional gluten-free roll for a deliciously celiac-safe sandwich.
#44 Buffalo Chicken Cheese Steak: Buffalo-sauced chicken and cheese are naturally free of gluten, but be sure you choose the gluten-free roll to make it celiac-safe.
#17 Mike’s Famous Philly: Thinly sliced steak with onions and cheese, which are gluten-free by ingredient and recipe, but remember to swap to the Udi’s gluten-free bread to avoid wheat.
#43 Chipotle Cheese Steak: Steak, cheese, and chipotle mayo are all gluten-free ingredients, but remember to order it on the gluten-free roll to make this celiac-friendly.
#56 Big Kahuna Cheese Steak: Steak with peppers, onions, and mushrooms tastes just as good on a gluten-free roll, too, but be sure to double-check for any cross-contamination.
#64 Grilled Portabella Mushroom & Swiss: Meaty portabella mushrooms and Swiss cheese are naturally gluten-free, but make sure you choose the gluten-free roll option.
#66 Portabella Cheese Steak: Steak, mushrooms, and cheese are all gluten-free by recipe, but you should request the Udi’s roll to complete it and make it properly celiac-friendly.
#65 Portabella Chicken Cheese Steak: Chicken, mushrooms, and cheese on a gluten-free roll make this a safe, savory choice for celiacs, or if you’re highly allergic to gluten.
#20 Grilled Pastrami Reuben: Pastrami, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese are gluten-free fillings, but ask for the gluten-free roll and remind the staff to be careful with shared prep areas.
Teriyaki Chicken Sub: Teriyaki sauce typically contains wheat, but not this one, according to Jersey Mike’s allergen guide, so pair this with the gluten-free Udi’s roll to make it a safe bet.
#19 BBQ Beef: Slow-roasted beef tossed in gluten-free BBQ sauce is safe on the Udi’s roll for a rich, celiac-friendly option, so consider this one, too, if you’re allergic to gluten.
ChixRoni LTO: A fun mix of chicken, pepperoni, and cheese, and simply swap to the gluten-free roll for a wheat-free treat, which is welcomed if you’re a celiac.
#79 Grilled Italian: Ham, provolone, pepperoni, salami, and veggies, and all the other default toppings are all gluten-free ingredients, but just remember to choose the gluten-free roll.
#17 Halal Steak Philly: Halal steak, onions, and cheese come together neatly on a Udi’s roll to create a gluten-friendly version of this halal-certified hot sub.
#43 Halal Chipotle Cheese Steak: Halal steak and chipotle mayo blend perfectly on a gluten-free roll, but just remember to ask for it, instead of the default wheat-based breads.
#56 Halal Big Kahuna Cheese Steak: Halal steak with peppers, onions, and mushrooms is all gluten-free by recipe, but make sure you order it on the gluten-free roll.
#16 Halal Chicken Philly: Halal chicken, onions, and cheese served on a Udi’s roll make this sub safe for celiacs, or if you’re highly allergic to or are intolerant to gluten and wheat.
#42 Halal Chipotle Chicken Cheese Steak: Halal chicken and chipotle mayo with cheese can be built on that same Udi’s gluten-free roll, but remember to watch out for cross-contact, too.
#55 Halal Big Kahuna Chicken Cheese Steak: Halal chicken, peppers, onions, and jalapeños are gluten-free, and once again, remember to order it with the Udi’s gluten-free roll.
#44 Halal Buffalo Chicken Cheese Steak: Halal chicken tossed in buffalo sauce with cheese, which are all gluten-free ingredients, made safe when ordered with the gluten-free roll.
#31 Halal Chicken California: Halal chicken, avocado, bacon, and tomato taste great on the Udi’s roll without any other tweaks or changes, but watch the extra add-ons for any gluten.
#26 Halal Bacon Ranch Chicken Cheese Steak: Halal chicken, bacon, and ranch dressing can all sit safely on a Udi’s gluten-free roll, making this another safe bet for celiacs.
In short, all the hot subs in our Jersey Mikes gluten-free menu guide can be made gluten-free by swapping out the default, wheat-based bread options for the Udi’s gluten-free roll. 🥪
As always, aside from swapping out the bread, remember to ask the local Jersey Mike’s staff for fresh glove changes and clean prep areas to help minimize cross-contamination. 🍅🥓🥬
Breakfast
Nothing beats a nice sub for breakfast, but sadly, unlike those hot and cold subs in our Jersey Mikes gluten-free menu, these breakfast items can’t be ordered with a gluten-free roll. 🥓🧀
So, without a gluten-free substitute (wheat-based bread only), all of these breakfast items are unsafe for celiacs, or if you have a severe gluten allergy, so it’s worth avoiding entirely. 🍳🥩
❌ #1 Porkroll, Egg, and Cheese
❌ #2 Bacon, Egg, and Cheese
❌ #3 Sausage, Egg, and Cheese
❌ #4 Ham, Egg, and Cheese
❌ #5 Steak, Egg, and Cheese
❌ #6 Cheese, Ham, Peppers, and Mushrooms
❌ #7 Bacon, Egg, Cheese, Peppers, and Mushrooms
❌ #8 Cheese, Ham, Bacon, Peppers, and Mushrooms
❌ Egg and Cheese Sandwich
❌ Egg and Cheese
With that said, let’s check out what’s inside each of these breakfast dishes in our Jersey Mikes gluten-free guide to see what makes them a dangerous choice for celiacs:
#1 Porkroll, Egg and Cheese: Classic breakfast roll with savoury pork roll, folded egg and some melted American cheese, but they’re served on a wheat bun, so avoid this if you’re a celiac.
#2 Bacon, Egg and Cheese: Crispy applewood-smoked bacon, egg, and cheese on a wheat roll, which contains gluten in the wheat-based white bread, and it’s prepared on shared griddles.
#3 Sausage, Egg and Cheese: Pork sausage patty, egg, and cheese layered on wheat bread, with no gluten-free substitute available, and there are also a lot of cross-contact risks at the griddle.
#4 Ham, Egg and Cheese: Honey-glazed ham, egg, and cheese served in a traditional wheat roll, making it unsafe for gluten-free diets, or if you’re highly sensitive/allergic to gluten.
#5 Steak, Egg and Cheese: Thinly sliced steak with egg and cheese on a wheat-based bun, and it contains gluten on that wheat-based bun, and it’s then grilled alongside other wheat items.
#6 Cheese, Ham, Peppers, and Mushrooms: Melted cheese, diced ham, sautéed peppers, and mushrooms on a wheat roll, which contains gluten in the bread and uses shared prep areas.
#7 Bacon, Egg, Cheese, Peppers, and Mushrooms: Bacon, egg, cheese, peppers, and mushrooms stuffed into a wheat-based white bread bun, with no gluten-free bread option available.
#8 Cheese, Ham, Bacon, Peppers, and Mushrooms: Combination of cheese, ham, bacon, some peppers, and mushrooms on wheat bread, so avoid this if you’re strictly gluten-free.
Egg and Cheese Sandwich: Folded egg and cheese on a standard wheat sub roll, with not a single alternative gluten-free bread being offered, so avoid this if you’re a celiac.
Egg and Cheese: While omitting the bread makes this just egg and cheese (which are gluten-free), it might still be prepped on shared equipment, with loads of cross-contamination.
Overall, if you’re craving Jersey Mike’s for breakfast, it will be worth avoiding their breakfast menu completely if you’re a celiac, given the lack of gluten-free alternatives here. 🥪🚫🌾

GF Snickerdoodle: Certified gluten-free snickerdoodle cookie, which is factory-sealed and free of cross-contact risk, so if you’re a celiac and you want a cookie, get this one instead.

Tastykake: Packaged snack brand items (e.g., Butterscotch Krimpet, Chocolate Kandy Kake, and Cream Filled Buttercream Cupcakes, etc.) are made with wheat flour, so it’s unsafe for celiacs.
French Fries: Hand-cut and twice-fried potatoes that are cooked in shared fryers, with really high cross-contact risks due to the shared fryer oil, and the Jersey Mike’s ingredients list also mentions the inclusion of wheat flour.
Starbucks Cold Brew: Bottled or canned Starbucks Cold Brew, which contains no gluten in the ingredients, and it’s also factory-sealed to prevent contamination.
Bubly: Flavoured sparkling water in cans, and it’s gluten-free by recipe and factory-sealed for extra safety against tampering or cross-contamination.

Grilled Chicken Salad: Mixed greens topped with strips of simply seasoned, grilled chicken breast. The chicken and produce are gluten-free by recipe, but the chicken is cooked on shared grills and the salad is built on common counters, posing some cross-contact risk.
To Sum Up
Overall, the Jersey Mikes gluten-free menu is surprisingly abundant with many celiac-friendly choices, mostly thanks to their recent inclusion of Udi’s gluten-free rolls as a bread option. 🥪
All you need to do is order a regular cold or hot sub, but swap the regular wheat-based bread options for the Udi’s gluten-free roll, and you now have a delicious celiac-friendly sub! 🥓🍖
Plus, all the regular toppings, proteins, and sauces are naturally gluten-free, but if you like to customize your cold or hot sub, make sure those add-ons are also gluten-free, too. 🧀🍅
In addition, I’d also keep a close eye on the prep station while they’re handling your subs, just in case there’s any cross-contamination from the shared prep tables and shared equipment.
Alas, the same can’t be said about Jersey Mike’s breakfast menu, but hey, at least most of the sides, extras, drinks, and beverages there are gluten-free, leaving you with plenty of options!

Frequently Asked Questions
As I was working on this Jersey Mikes gluten-free menu guide, I found some interesting queries while browsing through social media and forums, so here’s what I think of them:
Does Jersey Mike’s offer gluten-free bread?
Yes! Most Jersey Mike’s locations carry Udi’s gluten-free rolls. You can build any cold or hot sub on this gluten-free roll instead of the default wheat-based breads to make it celiac-friendly. The default toppings, cheese, sauces, and proteins are also gluten-free, but be careful when you are trying to tack on more add-ons and other toppings, as some of those might contain gluten.
Which subs can I order gluten-free at Jersey Mike’s?
Nearly every sub on the menu, including their hot and cold subs, from their signature #2 Jersey Shore’s Favorite to the Mike’s Hot Honey Chicken Cheese Steak, can all be made gluten-free by swapping to the Udi’s gluten-free roll. All their meats, cheeses, veggies, and dressings at Jersey Mike’s are naturally wheat-free by recipe, but be wary, as some add-ons may contain gluten.
Are there any sides or snacks at Jersey Mike’s that are gluten-free?
Yes! Most of the pre-packaged sides are gluten-free, including their kettle-style chips, fountain drinks, bottled water, juice, and the GF Snickerdoodle cookie. Tossed salads and grilled chicken salads are also gluten-free by ingredient, but watch for cross-contact on shared prep tables. In addition, remember that some of their snacks, sides, and extras aren’t gluten-free, either.
Can I get a gluten-free breakfast at Jersey Mike’s?
Unfortunately, that’s a hard no. Jersey Mike’s breakfast sandwiches and their entire breakfast menu are all served on standard wheat bread, with no gluten-free bread option. If you’re after a hearty morning bite, your safest bet is to grab a GF Snickerdoodle cookie (if available at your local Jersey Mike’s location) and a coffee or bottled drink, and skip all those breakfast subs.
How can I minimize gluten cross-contact at Jersey Mike’s?
Always let your server or the kitchen staff know that you have celiac disease or a severe gluten allergy. Remember to ask for the Udi’s gluten-free roll to be unwrapped fresh, and also request fresh gloves, clean slicer blades, and a wiped-down prep station. I’d also suggest ordering their sealed pre-packaged sides and drinks whenever possible to further reduce any cross-contact.
