Ingredients

Understanding each ingredient is key to creating the perfect gluten-free chocolate brownie. These carefully selected components work together to create a delightful, rich treat that’s both safe for coeliacs and delicious for everyone.

  • 110g Gluten-free plain flour
  • 1 tsp Gluten-free baking powder
  • 110g Soft butter
  • 85g Good quality cooking chocolate
  • 2 Free-range eggs
  • 110g chopped nuts
  • 110g Dark brown sugar

Instructions

Baking is part science, part art – and these instructions will guide you through each precise step of creating the perfect gluten-free chocolate brownies.

Follow these detailed steps to ensure a consistently delicious result every single time.

  • Preheat your oven to 175°C (Gas 4). This ensures your brownies will bake evenly and achieve that perfect fudgy texture.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine all the dry ingredients: gluten-free plain flour, gluten-free baking powder, chopped nuts, and dark brown sugar. Whisk these together to ensure even distribution and prevent clumps.
  • Create a bain-marie by placing a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Make sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. In this bowl, gently melt the chocolate and butter together, stirring occasionally until smooth and glossy.
  • Pour the melted chocolate and butter mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix well using a wooden spoon or spatula, ensuring all the dry ingredients are fully incorporated.
  • Add the free-range eggs to the mixture and beat well. This will help create a smooth, cohesive batter.
  • Grease a 24cm (8-inch) square tin or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  • Pour the brownie batter into the prepared tin, spreading it evenly with the back of a spoon or spatula.
  • Place the tin in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes. To check if it’s fully cooked, insert a skewer into the centre of the brownie, If it comes out clean, your brownies are ready.
  • Once baked, carefully remove from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for about 10 minutes.
  • After 10 minutes, turn out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
  • Once cooled, cut into squares and serve with your favourite accompaniments – hot chocolate sauce and raspberries, cream, or ice cream all work wonderfully!

Gluten-Free Chocolate Brownie Tips

Here are some tips to help you make the most out of this recipe:

Avoid Cross-contamination

If you are preparing the chocolate brownie in a kitchen that is not entirely gluten-free, take precautions to avoid cross-contamination. Use separate utensils, cutting boards, and cooking surfaces to prevent gluten from coming into contact with the ingredients.

Use room-temperature ingredients

It is better to have your ingredients at room temperature as it helps to make a smoother mixture. This in turn traps in the air which then expands when in the oven. This process makes your brownies light and fluffy.

Use melted butter

Using melted butter in brownies is best as it creates a moist and chewy brownie texture.

Label items

Consider buying two of certain shared food items like jam, and butter, dedicate one, and label it as gluten-free.

Cooking oil

Use separate oils to fry gluten-free foods as they will become contaminated and not safe to eat.

Personal Hygiene

Always wash your hands with hot water and soap before you handle any ingredients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Baking gluten-free can be intimidating, but knowledge is power. These carefully curated questions and answers will help demystify the process and build your confidence in creating delicious gluten-free treats.

Can I freeze these brownies?

Yes, these brownies freeze well. Once cooled, wrap them individually in cling film and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or warm slightly in the microwave before serving.

Can I use a different type of nut?

Absolutely! While this recipe uses walnuts, you can substitute with any nut you prefer, such as pecans or almonds. You could also omit the nuts entirely for a nut-free version.

How can I tell if my brownies are done?

Insert a skewer into the centre of the brownies. If it comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs, your brownies are done. Be careful not to overbake, as this can lead to dry brownies.

Can I use milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate?

While you can use milk chocolate, dark chocolate is recommended as it provides a richer flavour. If you do use milk chocolate, you might want to reduce the amount of sugar slightly to balance the sweetness.

How long do these brownies keep?

When stored in an airtight container at room temperature, these brownies will keep fresh for up to 5 days. For longer storage, keep them in the refrigerator for up to a week.
